Practitioner Bio
Born c. 1574 in Cavillana, Portugal. Occupation: Médico. Entered the Indies by assuming an alias on multiple occasions. Arrested by the New Spain Tribunal in 1601, Tavares was reconciled and sentenced to 200 lashes, eight years galley service, and life imprisonment. He escaped New Spain and fled to Lisbon and then to Livorno before returning to the Indies and settling in Lima. Arrested by the Lima tribunal in 1606 and again in 1618. Torture by Inquisition officials led to confession of judaizing and of being circumcised in Livorno. Punished as a relapso in the 1625 Auto de Fe in Lima.
